What Causes Redness and Rosacea?
So, what is this redness on your face? Rosacea is a very common skin condition. It mainly affects the face, causing it to look red or flushed. While doctors don’t know the exact cause, they believe it’s a mix of your genes and things in your environment, which we call “triggers.” It is not contagious, so you cannot give it to someone or catch it from them.
Rosacea can look different on different people. There are generally four types:
- Flushing and Redness: This is the most common type. Your face, especially your nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin, gets red and may feel warm. You might also see tiny, broken blood vessels, which look like little red lines.
- Bumps and Pimples: Many people mistake this for acne. You might get red bumps and pus-filled pimples. But unlike acne, you won’t see blackheads. The skin can also feel oily and sensitive.
- Thickening Skin: In some cases, mostly in men, rosacea can cause the skin to become thick and bumpy. This often happens on the nose.
- Eye Irritation: This is called ocular rosacea. Your eyes might look watery or bloodshot. They can feel gritty, like there’s sand in them. Your eyelids might also get red and swollen.
You can have one or more of these types at the same time. The first step to feeling better is figuring out what’s causing your skin to react. These reactions are often called “flare-ups.”
Common Triggers for Rosacea Flare-Ups
A trigger is anything that makes your rosacea symptoms worse. Your triggers might be different from someone else’s. One of the best things you can do is learn what your personal triggers are. Here is a list of the most common ones:
- Sunlight: This is the number one trigger for most people. Even a little bit of sun can cause a flare-up.
- Stress: When you feel stressed or upset, your body can release chemicals that cause your skin to flush.
- Hot and Cold Weather: Here in Massachusetts, we know all about changing weather! Going from the cold winter air into a warm house can be a big trigger. The same goes for hot, humid summer days.
- Wind: A windy day can be very irritating for sensitive skin.
- Certain Foods and Drinks: Spicy foods are a well-known trigger. Hot drinks like coffee or tea can also cause flushing. For many, alcohol, especially red wine, is a major cause of redness.
- Exercise: Getting your body temperature up during a workout can lead to a flare-up. This doesn’t mean you should stop exercising! It just means you may need to take some extra steps to stay cool.
- Harsh Skincare Products: Products with alcohol, witch hazel, fragrance, or rough scrubs can make rosacea much worse.

Professional Treatments for Redness at Skin Tight Medical Spa
While managing triggers is important, sometimes you need extra help to calm your skin and get rid of stubborn redness. That’s where professional treatments come in. At Skin Tight Medical Spa, we use safe, advanced technology to give you the best results possible.
IPL Photofacial: The Magic of Gentle Light
One of the best treatments for the redness and broken blood vessels of rosacea is the IPL Photofacial. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It’s not a laser, but a special device that sends out many wavelengths of light at once.
How does it work? Think of the light as a magnet for color. It’s drawn to the red pigment in your broken blood vessels and the brown pigment in sunspots. The light sends a burst of energy that gently heats up and destroys these targeted cells without harming the skin around them. Over time, this makes the tiny vessels fade away, leaving your skin tone much more even and clear.
What is a treatment like? A treatment at our Natick, Acton, or Newton spa is quick and comfortable. Here’s what you can expect:
- First, we will clean your skin and apply a cool gel.
- You will wear special glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light.
- Our trained professional will then place the smooth glass tip of the IPL handpiece on your skin.
- You’ll feel a quick flash of light. Most people say it feels like a small rubber band snap. It’s a little surprising at first but not very painful.
- We will move the handpiece over the entire area we are treating. A full-face treatment usually takes only 20-30 minutes!
After the treatment, your skin might be a little pink for a few hours, like you have a mild sunburn. You can go right back to your daily activities. We usually recommend a series of 3 to 5 treatments, spaced about a month apart, to get the best results.
Your At-Home Skincare Plan for Calm, Happy Skin
What you do every day at home is just as important as the treatments you get in our spa. A good, gentle skincare routine will protect your skin, reduce irritation, and help you get the most out of your professional treatments.
Your Morning Routine: Protect and Defend
- Step 1: Cleanse with Care. Use a creamy, hydrating, soap-free cleanser. Use only your fingertips and lukewarm water (never hot!). Don’t scrub. When you’re done, gently pat your face dry with a soft towel.
- Step 2: Moisturize. A good moisturizer is your skin’s best friend. It helps repair your skin’s natural barrier. A strong barrier keeps moisture in and irritants out. Look for ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, and niacinamide.
- Step 3: Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen! This is the most important step in any skincare routine, especially for rosacea. The sun is a huge trigger. You must wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every single day. We recommend a mineral sunscreen (one with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) because they are usually less irritating than chemical sunscreens.
Your Evening Routine: Repair and Soothe
- Step 1: Cleanse Again. If you wear makeup or sunscreen (and you should be!), it’s a good idea to double-cleanse. Start with a gentle cleansing balm or oil to melt everything off, then follow up with your regular creamy cleanser.
- Step 2: Apply Treatments. This is the time to use any special serums or creams. This could be a prescription from a doctor or a calming serum recommended by our team.
- Step 3: Moisturize. End your day by applying a good layer of your favorite gentle moisturizer. This locks in hydration and helps your skin repair itself while you sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Rosacea
Is rosacea contagious?
No, not at all. Rosacea is not caused by a bacteria or virus that you can pass to someone else. It is a chronic inflammatory condition. You can’t catch it from touching or being near someone who has it.
Does an IPL treatment for redness hurt?
Most patients tolerate it very well. The feeling is often described as a quick, warm snap, like a rubber band hitting the skin. The sensation only lasts for a millisecond with each pulse of light. We use a cooling gel to make the experience as comfortable as possible.
How many IPL treatments will I need to see results?
This is different for each person and depends on how much redness you have. Most people see a significant improvement after a series of 3 to 5 treatments. We will create a custom plan for you during your free consultation and let you know what to expect.
Can rosacea be cured forever?
While there is no permanent, one-time cure for rosacea, it can be managed very effectively. With the right combination of professional treatments, a good home care routine, and lifestyle adjustments, you can achieve clear, calm skin and have very few, if any, flare-ups. Our goal is long-term remission, where your skin looks and feels great for years.
Will my insurance cover rosacea treatments?
In most cases, treatments like IPL Photofacials are considered cosmetic and are not covered by health insurance. However, we believe everyone deserves to feel good about their skin. We offer free consultations to discuss your goals and find a treatment plan that fits your personal budget. Don’t let cost stop you from exploring your options!
